New Year, New Me: Setting New Year's Resolutions That Don't Suck
Every year millions of people worldwide anticipate the beginning of a new year. It’s the perfect time to think about everything that we want to create in our personal and professional lives. Go-getters everywhere are on their Carpe Diem and eagerly research goal setting. They even go as far as investing in WacoWork memberships and online courses. They are all in and ready, running on momentum, hopes and dreams.
Then a funny thing usually happens around January 22nd (oh, wait! That’s today!).
Momentum is waning and it becomes easier (and preferable) to hit the snooze button on the daily actions that will manifest their dreams. They trade in what they really want (that summer beach bod) for what they want right now (more sleep).
“New Year, New Me” becomes more like, “New Year, Same Me.” Forbes estimates that only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year’s resolutions. To put that into perspective for you, this means that only 8 out of 100 people cross the finish line strong.

Here at WacoWork, we are inspired by all of our members because they are going for it in every area of their lives. They are go-getters and, just like it says on our wall, they are determined to “get s#!t done” year round.
Every day is New Year’s around these parts and we are down to help our members’ thrive and succeed.
Today we are going to share with you three ways to think about your New Year’s resolutions so that you don’t get to the end of this year and wonder where the heck your time went.
1) Reframe the way you view your New Year’s Resolutions.
When you’re thinking about everything you want to do this year, it’s really easy to create a giant to-do list. However, that’s not really empowering. Instead, ask yourself, “What do I want more of this year? What do I want less of?”
Perhaps you’d love to fit in your favorite little black dress or the suit you interviewed in five years ago. That’s a noble cause -- take care of your temple and it’ll take care of you. Instead of putting tremendous pressure on yourself to hustle hard and make it happen, think about what you need more of (and less of) in order to make it happen.
Perhaps that means more Luna Juice, less gas station coffee. Or more Rush Cycle, less couch potato mode. Or more Milo All Day and less drive thru fast food.
2) Keep it super simple and consistent.
It makes sense that you want what you want and that you want it right now. It’s also really easy to think about how far you have left to go. We don’t know about you, but we think that’s a recipe for quitting.
The truth is anything amazing takes time.
Instead of beating yourself up about what you do NOT have and what actions you have NOT taken, put your focus on taking simple and consistent steps towards your dreams. Yeah, you didn’t make it to the gym yesterday, but you were able to do a mile worth of laps around the WacoWork block.
That totally counts and we are here to give out virtual hi-fives right and left.
Bruce Lee said it best, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Keep your kicks simple and consistent so that the new you has the opportunity to blossom into your very own version of a martial arts master.
3) Track your wins.
...and do a little happy dance, if the spirit moves you.
Instead of focusing on all of the unchecked boxes on your to-do list, celebrate the check marks and let them inspire you to check off even more on your list.
We’ll let you in on a little secret: you have a superpower.
Yes, you.
Your superpower is your ability to choose what you put your focus on. What you focus on expands.
Focusing on your wins, no matter how big or small, feels good. When you feel good, you do good. When you feel bad, it’s hard to do good. It’s time to take your superpower and use it towards what you actually want: more wins.
You have greatness inside of you and it’s time to bring that greatness out for the world to see. It’s time to break up with your snooze button once and for all because the world is waiting for you to bless it with your brilliance in only the way you can.
